Is last generation's paddle the better deal?

The big paddle brands release a new generation of their flagship paddles roughly once a year: JOOLA's Pro IV became Pro V, CRBN's Genesis was joined by Barrage. When the new one lands, the old one usually gets discounted, and not evenly: one store may cut it by a third while another still charges full price. That gap is where most of the savings in pickleball are.

What usually changes between generations

• Graphics. Always.
• Construction tweaks: a new edge foam, a stiffer or more flexible throat, a new surface texture.
• Sometimes the core or the shape. A new core type, or a new mold, is when two generations really do play differently.
• The price. New generations often launch higher. JOOLA's Pro V launched at $299.95, up from $279.95 for Pro IV.

How to decide

1. Compare the specs. If shape, core thickness, weight and grip are the same, you are mostly paying for the new name.
2. Compare total prices, shipping included, at stores that have it in stock.
3. Check approval. Older paddles stay legal for USA Pickleball play unless they are removed from the approved list, but it is worth a look before a tournament.
4. Set a price alert on either generation and let the deal come to you.

Warranty on discounted stock

Paddle warranties usually run from the date of first retail sale and need proof of purchase, and some brands ask you to register the paddle. Buy discounted stock from an authorized store, keep the receipt, and ask what the warranty is before you pay.
